World Cancer Day is celebrated every year on February 4. World Cancer Day originated in the year 2000 at the first World Summit Against Cancer, which was held in Paris. The Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. It is the global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), in order to raise worldwide awareness, and improve education about Cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally thus it is imperative to work together to reimagine a world where cancer becomes both a preventable and curable disease. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of a group of cells in the body. It can occur at any age and if not detected at the right time and is not treated, it can increase the risk of death. When we choose to come together, we can achieve what we all wish for: a healthier, brighter world without cancer. It is also to be noted that National Cancer Awareness Day is celebrated on November 7 to coincide with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Marie Curie, who was born on this date in 1867, and whose works led to the development of radiotherapy to treat cancer. It was firstly announced in September 2014 by then Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
